2019 Subaru Ascent vs 2019 Kia Sorento Model Comparison Information in Redwood City, CA

May 23, 2019

The all-new 2019 Subaru Ascent takes all that you love about Subaru and puts it into a spacious 3-row SUV. It's powerful, fun, adventurous, and safe. Of course, it's also not without competition. The 2019 Kia Sorento is a popular 3-row SUV that costs a bit less than the 2019 Subaru Ascent. However, when you see just what these two offer, you'll find that Subaru gives you so much more value for your money. Once you've seen what makes the Subaru Ascent special, head to Carlsen Subaru for a test drive.

Subaru Ascent vs Kia Sorento: Interior

When you need to make the most out of your space, Subaru is the natural choice. The 2019 Subaru Ascent can seat up to eight occupants; the 2019 Kia Sorento, on the other hand, can only fit up to seven. You'll get more front and second-row headroom in the Subaru Ascent, as well as identical third-row headroom. You'll also get more shoulder room in all three rows of the Subaru Ascent, so your passengers can spread out and enjoy the ride.

The Subaru Ascent is great at fitting more passengers, but it can also fit more cargo! With the second and third rows of seats folded down, the 2019 Subaru Ascent has up to 86.5 cubic feet of cargo space. The most you'll get from the Kia Sorento is 73 cubic feet. In addition, every 2019 Subaru Ascent comes standard with roof rails so you can take along larger cargo. These are available upgrades only in the 2019 Kia Sorento.

Subaru Ascent vs Kia Sorento: Technology

The Subaru Ascent and the Kia Sorento both come standard with six-speaker audio systems. However, the 2019 Subaru Ascent has an available 14-speaker Harman Kardon QuantumLogic Surround Sound audio system. The most you'll get from the Kia Sorento is a 10-speaker Harman Kardon system. The Subaru Ascent also has a Navigation system available on all but the entry-level model. To get available navigation in the Kia Sorento, you have to upgrade several times.

Subaru Ascent vs Kia Sorento: Performance

The Ascent is powered by a BOXER® engine that gives it a smooth, enjoyable ride--as well as up to 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque! This is much better than the standard 185 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque that you'll find in the Kia Sorento. You might expect that, with such a power difference, the Kia Sorento has the clear edge on gas mileage--but this isn't the case. The front-wheel drive Kia Sorento gets up to 29 miles per gallon, while the Subaru Ascent gets up to 27. If you choose an all-wheel drive Kia Sorento, it will only get up to 26 mpg.

The 2019 Kia Sorento does have an available V6 engine that has more horsepower than the 2019 Subaru Ascent. However, it still has less torque than you'll find in the Subaru, as well as less towing capacity.

When it comes to off-road capability, Subaru is the clear choice. We mentioned earlier that you can equip the Kia Sorento with all-wheel drive, but it comes standard as a front-wheel drive vehicle. By comparison, every 2019 Subaru Ascent comes standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive for powerful off-road performance. You'll also get 8.7 inches of ground clearance on the 2019 Subaru Ascent. The Kia Sorento has just 7.3 inches, making it less capable of clearing bigger obstacles.

Subaru Ascent vs Kia Sorento: Safety

The 2019 Subaru Ascent and the 2019 Kia Sorento both rank as some of the safest SUVs around, having both earned the coveted 2019 Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. However, Subaru once again has the edge. The standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive may make it great for exploring off-road trails, but it also gives it extra safety. When you drive a Subaru Ascent, you'll get the extra traction that AWD provides.

Subaru Ascent vs Kia Sorento: Driver Assist Technology

Driver assist technology has become more common lately, and both of these 3-row SUVs have plenty of features to keep you protected. The difference? Every 2019 Ascent comes standard with Subaru EyeSight®, which includes pre-collision braking, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure and sway warning features. You can find most of these same features in the 2019 Kia Sorento, as well--but they're not standard. In fact, they're not even available on lower trim levels.
